High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Skin Treatments
For those searching for a safe, non-surgical skin tightening option to rejuvenate the face or body, there are a few options including the use of High Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU). Also marketed as “Ultherapy”, or “Ultrasound Skin Tightening”, this non-invasive process involves the use of focused acoustic waves that tighten and shorten the underlying Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) layer which supports the skin, and also to trigger collagen production within the skin. This results in not only wrinkle reduction, but true skin lifting to genuinely address skin laxity.
Without experiencing any patient downtime, this procedure lifts muscle and tones loose, sagging skin. Treatment areas can include the abdomen, thighs, arms, buttocks, brows and forehead, the chin area, neck, décolletage and stretch marks. Deeper HIFU treatments are also available on body areas to offer fat reduction in problematic areas. Generally one treatment is all that is required, with follow ups required every twelve months to maintain results.
How Does it Work?
HIFU produces focused acoustic energy to a specific area of the body with the use of a hand-held device. When applied, it creates inaudible sound waves that produce thermal coagulation zones at three different skin depths. The body naturally reacts with a wound healing response, which shortens the SMAS and creates new collagen resulting in tighter and stronger skin.
What Can I Expect?
A special conductive gel is first applied to the targeted area with the HIFU handheld device placed on the skin treating in defined rows spaced 2-3 millimetres apart. The process is then repeated twice over the same treatment area. When the treatment is complete, the ultrasound gel is removed with moisturiser applied to the area. Clients might feel a slight tingling sensation and some warmth from the handpiece. Tolerance to the treatment varies, some people experience little or no pain, while others may become slightly uncomfortable. Topical anaesthetic may be applied by the client prior to treatment if they wish.
After an initial consultation with one of our clinicians, appointment times usually require a half hour to an hour depending on the area(s) being addressed. Clients can expect to immediately return to their normal daily routines afterwards.
How Many Treatments Are Recommended?
Typically, only one treatment is required however depending on the degree of laxity, two initial treatments may be necessary. Results can usually be seen within three months after the initial treatment, and for the best results a maintenance appointment should be made annually. Because High Frequency Ultrasound treatments are progressive in nature, improvements continue a full six months post treatment. Most results are noticed within two to eight weeks with benefits lasting up to a year.
Am I A Good Candidate For Ultrasound Skin Tightening?
While HIFU treatments are suitable for people of any age, gender or skin colour, it is most suitable for those with mild to moderate loose skin, and is not intended to replace invasive medical procedures like cosmetic surgery.
People aged between 35 to 65 typically experience the best results, while smokers or those with sun damaged skin react less favourably to this procedure. Treatments should not be given to anyone with an active infection, open wound or visible acne on the treatment area. Pregnant women, people with pacemakers or any other electrical medical devices should also not seek HIFU treatment as well as anyone unable to recover normally from standard wound healing processes.
During the initial consultation our clinicians will examine the targeted area before treatment begins, answer any questions or concerns you may have about the procedure and determine overall suitability before proceeding.
