Folic Acid Benefits For A Healthy Body
What is Folic Acid?
One of the most important functions that keeps our bodies healthy is being able to metabolise what we consume into energy, and create building materials necessary for the proper development of the human body. To accomplish this, our cells require regular daily amounts of B vitamins, collectively referred to as Vitamin B Complex. Naturally occurring Folate and synthetic Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) are a key component of Vitamin B Complex that help drive a complex biochemical process where calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function properly.
Supplementation with Folic acid (or folinic acid) may be particularly important for those with the MTHFR gene mutation. We can establish if this applies to you with our Dripclub genome test.
Folic Acid is involved in producing our DNA, assists the formation of red blood cells and helps the body break down, use, and create new proteins. As Folic Acid is water-soluble and does not have side effects or risk of overdose, many processed foods will also contain Vitamin B9 as an additive.
The Importance of Folic Acid for Pregnant Women
Women who are pregnant need adequate amounts of Folic Acid to prevent miscarriage, “neural tube defects” and spina bifida among other potential complications including reducing the chances of gum disease occurring while pregnant.
Benefits For Men
While Folic Acid can help with heart disease prevention by regulating the amount of the amino acid homocysteine in the body, some also suggest that keeping your blood flowing smoothly is a key to preventing and even treating erectile dysfunction (ED).
Folic Acid May also be effective as a support for:
Serious kidney disease (end-stage renal disease or ESRD). About 85% of people with serious kidney disease have high levels of homocysteine. High levels of homocysteine have been linked to heart disease and stroke. Taking folic acid lowers homocysteine levels in people with serious kidney disease.
High blood pressure. Research suggests that taking folic acid daily for at least 6 weeks reduces blood pressure for those with high blood pressure. (Taking folic acid with blood pressure medication does not seem to lower blood pressure more than taking only blood pressure medicine).
Stroke. Taking folic acid may reduce the risk of stroke by 10% to 25% in who live in countries that don’t fortify grain products with folic acid. Folic acid doesn’t seem to prevent strokes in people who live in countries that do fortify grain products with folic acid.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Taking folic acid with other vitamins including vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 may reduce the risk of developing age-related vision loss.
Depression. Limited research shows that taking folic acid along with medication may improve symptoms in people with depression.
Precautions & Warnings should always be considered by your healthcare practitioner before taking any medication or nutritional supplement.
